Terms of use
What you agree to when you read, write for or pay Nyirobi — in plain language.

Who we are
Nyirobi is a magazine of essays, comics and film published from Nairobi, Kenya, by Nyirobi Media. These terms cover the website and everything you do on it: reading, commenting, following writers, subscribing by email, buying paid pieces and writing for us.
Reading and your account
Most of the magazine is free to read without an account. An account lets you comment, follow writers and buy paid pieces. Keep your password to yourself; you are responsible for what is done with your account.
Comments must be your own words about the piece they sit under. The desk removes comments that are abusive, spam or off-topic, and may suspend an account that keeps posting them. A removed comment leaves a marker in the thread so the conversation still makes sense.
Paid pieces
There is no membership or subscription. Each paid piece is bought on its own for Ksh 50, once, and stays unlocked for your account for as long as the piece is on the site. Nothing renews and nothing is charged again.
A donation is a gift to the writers and unlocks nothing: paid pieces are only unlocked by buying them.
Payments are taken by IntaSend, which handles your card or M-Pesa details — Nyirobi never sees or stores them. Prices include any tax that applies. If a piece you paid for is taken down, you can ask for a refund.
Writing for Nyirobi
Writers keep the copyright in their work and give Nyirobi the right to publish it on the magazine for as long as it is live. A writer earns only from sales of their paid pieces: 70% of what reaches Nyirobi after the payment provider's fee, fixed at the moment of each sale. A refunded sale earns nothing. Earnings, withholding and payouts follow the figures shown in the writer's studio.
What we can change
We may update these terms. If a change affects what you pay or what you get, we will say so on the site and by email before it applies; a piece you already bought stays yours.
